Once again this year, Nursing students are collaborating with GECA Onlus on the “Let’s shock the heart” project, aimed at combating sudden cardiac death through the dissemination of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
In Italy, about 60,000 people die each year from cardiac arrest, often suddenly and unexpectedly. The widespread presence of AEDs in cities has been shown to significantly reduce these deaths, but many areas still lack them.
For this reason, students engage in fundraising to purchase new defibrillators to be installed in busy public places, and promote training activities to teach their use. Last year, 3 AEDs were purchased and 3 informational videos produced, but the goal is to do even more.
The central message is clear: do not be afraid to intervene, because in case of cardiac arrest every minute is precious in saving a life.
